Those of you who are saying it's "too literal" or even suggesting this is not genius are just plain wrong. This was so cutting edge when it appeared first. And how is it literal? Literal means that it spells it out. Here it's not spelling it out at all.

But I do agree, this is not a logo. It's art for a poster, based on a logo. But it is wonderful as such.

Well thought out and creative but looks disjointed. Substituting symbols make it too literal.

This was done tongue-in-cheek for an IBM internal event.
The colors come from the then current packaging for typewriter ribbons. Rand had a tremendous influence with
the IBM chairman Thomas J. Watson, and was responsible for the 8-bar logo, the selectric typewriter casing, and the decision to hire first rate architects for facilities - van de Rhoe, Saarinen and others.

Nice, not genious but still nice.

it is for an inside thing so it is easy to recognise for the targeted audience.

i absolutely love Paul Rand, and i can't get enough of this as a poster design, it wouldn't work so much as a logo though, everything is just too separate; elements, colors, etc. awesome poster though

Yes, Paul Rand is definitely and inspiration to most of us when it comes to logo design, but i am not a fan of this logo either. Its obvious what hes doing but for me it is just too literal. And the color choices bugs me for some reason

Nice concept. May be using some other colors would have better enhanced the logo itself.
