The concept is very strong and very well done, avoiding the used and abused concept of “spotlight” dear Habs. I would like to answer some of the earlier comments (I hope that the designer doesn’t mind). I think whomever did this logo was aware of the 1 color issue and I’m quite sure that there is an alternative approach for the 1 color media, you don’t just go to monochrome mode and “TaDaaaaaa, there you go!”, isn’t that right dear Russel? And what about all the fuss about gradient in logomarks??? I am well aware that you have been taught that gradient is the DEVIL, but cmon’ you should know better James Hsu, this is design, you can use whatever you need as long as it’s justifiable, and in this case, I don’t see how it can be made otherwise. Where have you people been for the last 5 years??? This is new media. No restrictions as long as the right things are in the right place, you are free my children, fly awaaaaay!!! Sean, I have no comment for you man, HEHEHEHE, you crack me up dude, you are a funny Photoshop expert.
I apologize if I may sound a bit harsh, but you are free to comment and I am free to comments on your comments. Usually I embrace criticism because of it’s constructive nature, but since I’m not the designer here, I liked, for once, giving those who think they know better a piece of my mind.
I think constructive criticism should criticize then offer an alternative or a better solution.
Criticizing just to show off shows nothing but weakness, so as defending blindly and pretending that every thing we’ve been taught, every thing the great design minds have created through years of experience… suddenly vanished. And now it’s a new era when everything is allowed, everything should be “OUT OF THE BOX”, where the eye is not hurt anymore, but the pride of a designer is.

Creativity: Definitly not a new idea
Font choice: Very common font, counter space is very small, will cause a problem on smaller applications
Visibility: Poor, not enough contrast, very dark
Application: what if the background is white? will the “logo” still show?
Legibility: All i want (can) read from the logo is the “lig” part
General comment – summary: Primitive, mediocre, uninspiring, weak concept, university level design, still a sketch not a logo, needs a few more days of work.

first sketch concept (if any), illegible, and doesn’t work across all media.. a lot of study still needs to be done!

ive been asked to create a logo for spotlight and im looking around to see what there is around to avoid having a similar logo ..allow me to say that reading throught the comments that i agreed with most about the concept..i suppose u cant be constructive when something dull is looking u straight in the eye.
the type is good. the only problem is that when you go to 1 color, the logo completely loses all meaning.
This logo would have been nicer if the word was wrapped around a circle… the circle being the spot light beam.
This is a very very week logo in my opinion…
I agree with Russell, now it is looking like in spotlight but when they are off all the meaning of the logo will disappear.
I don’t like it at all… The only place I could see this logo maybe working is in an animation.
a gradient for a logomark?
how would this be consistently reproduced?
Solid concept, I just feel like the execution needed
to be more thought out, (+1 on the one color remark).
Very hard to read, especially if the screen is slightly tilted, although I imagine this would look really nice UV spot varnished on print media.
At first I thought this was a joke. But April fools already passed… Worst logo I have seen so far on this website. Two thumbs waaaaay down.
Looks like just everyone here agrees that using the gradient as the key element doesn’t work. The people have spoken!
I like the typeface but the effect is kind of meaningless and shortsighted as it doesn’t consider other medias than print.
Not very impressive. Kind of liek something a PhotoShop beginner would make.
I don’t really like the gradient. on a fax header I think it would lose its charm.
not a really good concept in the end.
A lit of bit too dark, anyway simple but very meaningful idea.
I too could see this as an illustration, but as a logo I don’t think it would work very well across a broad range of media.
